EV Charging
EV Charger Installation in Clyde Hill, WA
Most garages here can take a Level 2 charger. The question is what the panel has left once the heat pump, the range and the hot tub have taken their share. We work that out before we quote. Ask us on (000) 000-0000.
A charger is a continuous load, which means it is sized at 125 percent of its rating. A 48-amp charger therefore wants a 60-amp breaker, and that is a serious slice of a 200-amp service. On the larger Clyde Hill houses we often find the service is fine but the panel is full, so the work becomes a sub-panel or a tandem rearrangement rather than a straight circuit.
How it goes
What the job looks like
01
Load calculation
We add up the real connected load, not a rule of thumb, and tell you what the panel can carry today.
02
Route and mount
We agree where the unit hangs and how the cable gets there, so the run is tidy and the cable reach actually works.
03
Circuit and commissioning
The circuit goes in, the charger is set to the right amperage, and we watch it pull a full charge before we pack up.
Detail
What we watch for
- Load-managed options — if the panel is tight, a load-management device can let the charger share capacity rather than forcing an upgrade
- Hardwired or plug-in — both are fine; hardwired is required outdoors in some configurations and we will say which applies
- Cable reach planned — we measure to the car's port, not to the nearest wall, so the lead is not stretched across the bay
- Permit pulled — EV circuits are inspected work and we file for them as a matter of course
Questions
Asked often
Can my panel take a charger without an upgrade?
Often yes. A 200-amp service with a modern heat pump usually has room for a 40-amp charger, and where it does not, load management can make it work. We run the calculation before quoting so the answer is based on your panel rather than an average.
Should I get the fastest charger available?
Not necessarily. A 48-amp unit adds roughly 37 miles an hour and needs a 60-amp circuit; a 32-amp unit adds about 25 and needs 40. If the car sits overnight, the smaller circuit usually charges it just as fully and leaves more capacity in the panel.
